The Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, has decried the condition of most prisons in the country, including the one in his state. Hence, he has built a 3,000-capacity cell outside Owerri, the state capital.

The governor made the disclosure over the weekend, during a visit by the controller-general of prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, in company of senior personnel of the prisons, The Guardian reports.

Legit.ng gathers that in a statement released by his chief press secretary, Sam Onwuamedo, the governor also called for improved prison service and conditions across the country.

Okorocha, while conducting Ahmed across the facility, said it was ready for commissioning by President Muhammadu Buhari and handing over to the authorities.

He said: “I discovered that the state of Imo prisons was the worst, and I had to plead passionately with the controller-general not to display it further to the public because of the very poor images.

“I discovered that they were having about 70 to 100 inmates in one small room without facilities at all.

“This prompted the speedy construction of new prison headquarters with accommodation for over 3,000 inmates with offices, as a quick response and funded by the Imo state government.

“I hope that when this is replicated all over the country, the presentation of those pictures will no longer be relevant to all of us.”

In response, Ahmed applauded the governor for the gesture; stating that he was excited by the facility.

He further disclosed that some ambitious inmates were looking beyond life behind the walls.

His words: “The prisons pharmacy in Owerri is still stocked and we have started exposing prisoners to information and workshops as a way of reform. Today, we have prisoners with certificates of GL 1, GL 2 & GL 3.

“In fact, in Abeokuta Prisons, 50 inmates have graduated while 465 are doing degree programmes with NOUN.

“One is doing his PhD and this brought the attention of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to Nigeria to witness the combination of skill acquisition with education in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the controller of prisons, Lagos command, Tunde Ladipo, said 24 inmates of the Ikoyi Prisons will participate in the forthcoming 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to Ladipo, preparations had been concluded by the board to ensure a hitch-free examination for the inmates in its facility.

He noted that the inmates who had been undergoing intensive coaching at the facility’s school had demonstrated a great zeal and a high level of commitment in readiness for the examination.

A former Director-General of the Nigeria Maritime Agency, Buba Galadima, has accused the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria of witch-hunt after the agency took possession of his business and assets on Tuesday in Abuja. Galadima, an ardent critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, claimed that he did not borrow money or have unpaid debt with Unity Bank, which lodged a complaint against him and occasioned AMCON’s move on Tuesday. The properties taken over include House No. 15, Addis Ababa Crescent, Wuse Zone 4, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and House No. 4, Bangui Street, Wuse 2, also in Abuja.  Reacting to the situation, Galadima said, “This is an attempt to disgrace and break me down. This is injustice and an attempt to humiliate me. "But I am unbreakable and they can never silence me. They sacked me and over 50 people that sleep in the apartment. "We don’t know where to go.
