Nigerian Lady breaks 31-year-old jinx, emerges first university students' union president

Amid growing challenges of gender inequality and patriarchy, a young Nigerian lady, Ahmed Tawakalt Adeola, has emerged the first students' union president of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Ogun state.

Adeola walked her way to victory having defeated his male challengers in a keenly contested students' union election, breaking a long standing 31-year-old jinx.

She cruised to a comfortable landslide victory with a landmark total vote of 2,320 against three other opponents; Carbon 5 who scored 1032 votes, Provost scoring 68 votes and Egalitarian with 146 votes.

A finding by Legit.ng reveals that Adeola, prior to the table-turning election that was held on March 7, 2019, had served in different political capacities in the institution's union body.

It also recalls that the erstwhile students’ union president of the university, Ayobami Popoola, was suspended for two weeks over an alleged misappropriation of N612,000.

Reacting to her victory, a social media user, Ayotomiwa Olutayo through a post on her official Twitter handle, congratulated the newly elected FUNAAB president for shaping the patriarchal narratives against women.

According to her, the era of women has beckoned in an daring way that is ''changing the narratives.''

''l want you to take off your mind any gender barriers in respect to my ability to deliver as the president, I want to echo in you, the solace of assertion of that fact that this new administration will deliver beyond imagination.

''Take this from me, this is because it is not a unionism of gender, but a unionism of all by all and for all,'' Adeola said while officially taking the mantle of responsibility.
