Never in Nigeria’s history has all arms of govt been led by one religion - Clerics urge lawmakers-elect to install Christians as leaders of 9th NASS

- The association expressed concern over a situation where the three arms of government would be led by Muslims

- The association also asserted that it won’t allow the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) be ridiculed by any Muslim group

Christians elected into the 9th National Assembly have been urged by the Christian Association of Clergies in Nigeria (CAC-NIG), to ensure that Muslims don’t end up heading the Senate and House of Representatives.

The concern was expressed in a statement issued on Sunday, April 28 by the association’s national president, Archbishop Yiman Orkwar, via his special assistant on media, Pastor Ortindi Torough Baka, The Guardian reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the association expressed concern over a situation where the three arms of government would be led by Muslims, stating that this would spell doom for the nation’s democracy and principle of equity.

The statement read: “If they allow it, it would set the most dangerous precedence in the polity, as all the heads of government will be headed by Muslims. Never in the history of Nigeria has all heads of government been from one religion.

“We urge our Christian faithful never to allow what seems to be a deliberate plan by Muslims to be actualised in the country in our generation. Posterity will never forgive them if they allow this plan to succeed.”

Orkwar accused the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) of supporting President Muhammadu Buhari in his lopsided appointments.

He further described as hypocritical, claims by the NSCIA’s deputy secretary general, Professor Salisu Shehu, that Christians had lorded it over their Muslim counterparts in the past.

He queried: “In 2007, when David Mark was Senate president and Patricia Etteh was speaker of the House of Representatives, the then chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), Idris Legbo Kutigi was a Muslim. He took over from another Muslim, Salihu Moddibo Alfa Belgore.

“Between 1979 and December 1983, when Joseph Wayas was Senate president, and Ume Ezeoke who later handed over to Benjamin Chaha, as speaker of the House, the then president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, was also a Muslim.

“During the aborted Third Republic, Senators Iorchia Ayu and later Ameh Ebute were Senate president and Hon Anakwo was speaker of the House. Who was military president, was it not General Ibrahim Babangida, a Muslim?”

The association also asserted that it won’t allow the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) be ridiculed by any Muslim group; and cautioned the NSCIA to be mindful of making inciting statements capable of throwing the country into religious disharmony.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that ahead of the inauguration of members of the 9th National Assembly, Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan, has promised to run a legislature that would promote unity among Nigerians and ensure transparency and accountability.

At a support-seeking rally for his bid to become the next Senate president, Lawan said he has the requisite legislative experience to run an effective upper parliamentary chamber.

The senator is a major contender for the stool of the number three citizen in the country.
