In Nigeria, campaigns and elections are held every four years since 1960s. In February 2019, yet another row of elections took place all over the country. Through these electoral exercises, Muhammadu Buhari and his deputy Yemi Osinbajo have elected into office for the second time.
Thinking about the just concluded elections, no doubt, brings to mind thoughts about the very first election that took place in Nigeria. Way back in 1960 when Nigeria gained independence, elections were brand new and they were welcomed with much enthusiasm.
This is because holding elections held in its wake the possibility of truly having a democratic nation that was not held back by the shackles of colonialism. Over 50 years now, it is not known if all Nigerians ever hoped and dreamed for has come to pass
But what is surely known is that the conduction of electoral activities have been met with some sort of lackluster attention. No longer do people relish the experience of bracing the rain or sun just to make their votes count. The only bother for many, at this time, is that the elections should not be rigged or dubiously conducted.

At such a time like this, it is important to relive the experience of the very first election to take place in Nigeria. On account of this, Legit.ng shares with you a photo and video from the elections that took place all the way back in 1960.
The polling stations and voting exercises depicted below mainly focus on Lagos state. As can be seen, the culture of voting in the 1960s is way different from what we know now. The aura, fashion, materials and mannerisms of the elections at the time are completely out of this century.
