Legit Poll: Nigerians express mixed reactions on whether tougher punishment on Yahoo boys will discourage the act

Internet fraud, popularly called "Yahoo yahoo" is a financial crime mainly carried out on the cyberspace by some Nigerian youths commonly referred to as "Yahoo Boys".

Despite the Nigerian government's effort to stop the cyber crime, the culprits have continued to deploy several means to defraud unsuspecting victims of huge sums of money.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regularly cracks down on the "Yahoo boys", but this seems not to be very effective as many people still fall for their tricks.

Meanwhile, some people have also frowned at the way the security agents hunt down the cyber criminals, claiming that it is Nigeria's economic condition that pushed them to it.

How should the government handle the Yahoo boys scourge? Legit.ng in poll on social media asks Nigerians if a tougher punishment on Yahoo boys will discourage youths from participating in the act?

Out of the over 3,600 that participated in the poll on Facebook, 44% said a tougher punishment will discourage youths from participating in the act while 56% were of the opinion that a tougher punishment cannot help the situation.

Majority of those who participated in the poll on Twitter, however, believe that tougher punishment will discourage the youth from participating the act.
