Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s information and culture minister, said late Thursday, April 25, that the power to dissolve the federal cabinet rests with President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mohammed, in a statement made available to Legit.ng said the fact that the valedictory session of the federal cabinet will be held on May 22, 2019, does not mean that the cabinet will be dissolved on the same day.
The statement said the minister made the clarification over his earlier statement to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at thePresidential Villa.
Mohammed said it was the prerogative of the President to dissolve the cabinet anytime he chooses.
“It is therefore inaccurate to extrapolate from my statement - that the FEC valedictory session will hold on 22 May - to say that the president will dissolve the cabinet on the same day. They do not mean the same thing,” he said.
Legit.ng earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari was reportedly planning to dissolve the federal cabinet on May 22, 2019, before he is sworn in for a second term.
A report had cited Lai Mohammed as noting that as part of the dissolution of the cabinet, the president would hold a valedictory session of the cabinet May 22.
According to the report, Lai Mohammed told journalists shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday, April 25, that the cabinet is still intact until May 22.
