Just in: 3 north central aspirants for National Assembly leadership defy APC’s directive

There may be tougher days ahead for Femi Gbajabiamila, the member of the House of Representatives from Lagos state seeking the position of speaker at the ninth National Assembly.

This is because some of his colleagues have defied the directive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which endorsed him for the position at a recent meeting.

His co-contestants, especially from the north central zone, have reportedly defied the endorsement of Gbajabiamila with three of them continuing with their various campaigns.

The Nigerian Tribune reports that the members of the House from the north central zone and on the platform of the APC had asked their colleagues contesting for the position of the speaker to go ahead with their campaigns.

The report named the three aspirants from the north central as Honourable Mohammed Bago (Niger state), Honourable Idris Ahmed Wase (Plateau state) and Honourable John Dyegh (Benue state).

It was learnt that Bago visited the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at the weekend to seek royal support ahead of the election into the leadership of the National Assembly.

Hon Victor Ogene, the spokesperson of the campaign for Bago, said in a statement in Abuja that the Nupes, his ethnic group from Niger, have historical links with the Yoruba.

He confirmed Bago’s visit to the Ooni saying this was because of the latter’s stance as an advocate of youth inclusion in governance.

Thanking Oba Ogunwusi for the warm reception and royal blessings, Bago promising not to betray the confidence in him.

The statement quoted the Ooni of Ife as canvassing for youth inclusiveness in the leadership structures of the country.

“Yes, we now have the Not Too Young to Run law, but to compliment that we need to consciously bring the youth into leadership positions,” the Ooni said.
