The officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) enjoyed the constitutional right bear firearms in their line of duty, the secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha has disclosed.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, April 12, at the inauguration of 74 newly acquired FRSC operational vehicles and three ambulances, SGF said the position of the law establishing the corps was clear on its right to possession of firearms, Leadership reports.
According to Mustapha, the federal executive council has approved the procurement of crucial operational equipment for FRSC in order to function effectively.

He said: ''Section 19 of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007, stipulates that personnel of the commission, who are exposed to high risk in the enforcement of the provisions of this act, shall have same powers, authorities and privileges, including power to bear arms.
In his welcome address, Corps Marshal of FRSC, Bobboye Oyeyemi, said the procurement of the 74 patrol vehicles and three ambulances was an attestation to the fact that federal government is committed to the reinforcement mission of the corps.
According to him, the Nigerian road system needed an active monitoring through improved mechanisms, hence the development.
Oyeyemi also added that Cobra Squad Operation of the commission has been given necessary equipment to function well.
He added that the squad has cautioned 13,531 motorists, arrested 5,111 offenders for committing 5,501 offences within April 2018 and April 2019, adding 4,420, of the offenders we’re recommended for emotional psychology evaluation.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the federal government was said to be considering granting approval for officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to carry arms.
According to the report, the commission was really looking forward to getting the approval and had begun setting up its own armoury somewhere in the federal capital city Abuja.
