Former European Cup-winning star and club icon dies at 79

- Billy McNeill, former Celtic legend and skipper of European Cup-winning captain ,Billy McNeill, died on Monday, April 23 at the age of 79

- He suffered from dementia for a number of years and fought bravely to the end

- McNeill enjoyed a successful association with Celtic as a supporter, player, manager and more recently club ambassador

Celtic legend and European Cup-winning captain, Billy McNeill, has died at the age of 79, family sources confirmed on Monday, April 22.

According to Sky sport, McNeill became an iconic figure in Scottish football after captaining Celtic to their European Cup success in 1967, a performance that saw the club enter the record books as the first British club to achieve such feat.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father Billy McNeill.

"He passed away late on Monday (April 22) surrounded by his family and loved ones. He suffered from dementia for a number of years and fought bravely to the end, showing the strength and fortitude he always has done throughout his life.

"We would also like to note our love and appreciation to our mother, Liz, for the care, devotion and love she gave to our father throughout his illness. No one could have done any more.

"Whilst this is a very sad time for all the family and we know our privacy will be respected, our father always made time for the supporters so please tell his stories, sing his songs and help us celebrate his life,” a statement from his family on Celtic official website read in part.

Interestingly, McNeill’s achievements as a Celtic player will remain a reference point after winning nine successive Scottish league titles, as well as winning four more championship as a manager..

In all, McNeill enjoyed a successful association with Celtic which spanned over six decades as a supporter, player, manager and more recently club ambassador before his demise.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that former English professional footballer Darren Pitcher has been reported dead at the age of 49.

The death of the former Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace defender broke earlier on Monday with both clubs confirming his passing away on their website.

Pitcher, during his active days made 214 appearances with 12 goals to his credit for the League one side (Charlton) between 1988 and 1994.

After which he joined the Eagles in 1994 and netted twice in 83 matches after five season at the Selhurst Park.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
