EFCC probes JAMB over N8.7bn fraud, 15 zonal heads, coordinators to face trial

- The EFCC has launched a probe into the income generation of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)

- The reason for the probe by the anti-graft agency is to find out the the issues surrounding the alleged N8.7 billion fraud in JAMB

- EFCC has shortlisted 15 suspects who may be connected with the fraud case, some of which are zonal heads and state coordinators of the examinations body

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has started a probe into the cash inflow and outflow of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) between the years 2010 and 2016.

The reason for the probe by the anti-graft agency is to find out what really happened in the alleged N8.7 billion fraud in the commission, The Nation reports.

The EFCC have shortlisted 15 suspects connected with the case, among which are some zonal heads and state coordinators of the examinations body.

One of the suspects in the case is the body female accountant, Philomena Chise, who claimed that a snake swallowed N36 million, proceeds from the sale of the body e-facility cards.

It should be noted, however, that the fraud happened before the present head of the body, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, assumed duties.

According to the National, the stolen money was also proceeds from the sale of change of course cards which ended in individual purses.

A document obtained by The Nation from the EFCC give details of how the fraud happened in JAMB.

A part of it read: “Investigation revealed that Mr. Labaran Tanko was the JAMB State Coordinator of Lafia Office, Nasarawa State between 2011 and 2016.

“Investigation revealed that within the period of his tenure, Nasarawa State Office revealed a total of 24,882 e-facility cards out of which 24,037 were unsold while 845 were sold at the rate of N1,000 each. The expected revenue was N845,000 realized and remitted to JAMB.

“However he claimed that the remaining 23,147 cards got burnt in an accident he had along Lafia-Akwanga Expressway while 890 cards were missing.

“Meanwhile, contrary to his submission, forensic evidence obtained from the IT Unit of JAMB showed that the cards were sold and utilized by candidates within Nasarawa State and its environs..."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that JAMB revealed factors responsible for the delay in the release of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.

Reacting to the delay, JAMB’s head of information Fabian Benjamin on Thursday, April 17, said it was because some candidates were caught for massive fraud and impersonation.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo.
