Breaking: Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange arrested in London

An Australian computer programmer and Wikileaks co-founder, Julian Assange, has been arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Assange took refuge in the embassy since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over a sexual assault case that has since been dropped, BBC reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the Metropolitan Police Service said the 47-year-old Wikileaks co-founder was arrested over his failure to surrender to court.

According to President Lenin Moreno of Ecuador, Assange's asylum was withdrawn after the latter's repeated violations to international conventions.

Home secretary, Sajid Javid said in a tweet: "I can confirm Julian Assange is now in police custody and rightly facing justice in the UK.

"I would like to thank Ecuador for its cooperation & metpoliceuk for its professionalism. No one is above the law."

Assange had refused to leave the embassy, saying if he did he would be extradited to the United States for questioning over the activities of Wikileaks.

Legit.ng previously reported that the United States (US) justice department said it was planning to prosecute Julian Assange.

The Wikileaks boss has been in the custody of an Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012, having fled Sweden following allegations bordering on sexual assault.

Although the case was dropped in 2017, he still faces arrest for breaching bail conditions should he leave the embassy.

According to the then attorney general, Jeff Sessions in April 2017, the arrest of Assange would become a priority for the justice department.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
