9th Assembly: APC yet to learn from the mistake it made in 2015 - Shehu Sani

- Shehu Sani, the lawmaker representing Kaduna central at the Senate, has spoken about the incoming 9th National Assembly’s leadership elections

- Sani said APC should have a consensus on one candidate to avoid the repeat of what happened in 2015

- Federal lawmakers were earlier urged by a group, Advocates for Good Governance, to use open voting in electing leaders of the 9th Assembly

Shehu Sani, a senator representing Kaduna central at the Senate, said he does not think that APC has learnt from its mistakes that led to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as the leaders of 8th National Assembly.

Sani who made this known while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said the interest of other APC lawmakers in the leadership positions for the 9th Assembly could result in a repeat of what occurred in 2015.

He said: “With what I have seen, there are a lot of statements coming from the APC making positions that they have learnt their mistakes and this time around, they are going to make some corrections and achieve what they want to achieve.

“But in the real sense, I don’t think lessons were learnt from what I can see on the ground. If lessons were learnt, there would be only one candidate from the APC. As long as we have three contenders from the APC, there is a likelihood of a repeat of what happened in 2015.”

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a group called Advocates for Good Governance (AGG) on Wednesday, April 24, staged a protest at the entrance of the National Assembly, demanding the use of open voting in the election of leaders of the incoming 9th Assembly.

The protesters numbering hundreds carried placards with inscriptions such as “No To Secret Voting in NASS,” “Enough of Secrecy in NASS election,” among others.

Duro Meseko, leader of the group, said they were at the National Assembly to register their displeasure with what he called “planned use of secret voting in electing leaders of 9th National Assembly.”

Recall that Legit.ng reported that the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, April 21, denied any ulterior motive concerning his alleged roles in the tussle for the leadership of the ninth National Assembly.

Tinubu said in a statement by his media office that all he has done concerning the impending election of presiding officers of the National Assembly is to support the positions of the APC and President Buhari.
