6-year-old boy who took chicken he mistakenly ran over with bike to hospital gets honoured

A young Indian boy named Derek Lalchhanhima has won over the admiration of many people with his action. He was said to have offered 10 rupees to medical staff to help a chick he had accidentally hit with his bike. This deed of genuine concern was recognised after a family friend posted a photo taken by nurse on Facebook.

Derek C. Lalchhanhima who hails from Sairang in the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram begged hospital staff to save a chick he had accidentally ran over with his bike and this has made him a viral internet sensation in India.

In a photo, he was pictured holding the dead bird in one hand and a 10-rupee note - all the money he had - in the other with which he hoped to convince the hospital to treat a chicken which was already dead.

It was said by family friends that the concerned young lad had first begged his parents did not to take it to hospital. In the end, he took the dead body to the doctors himself. As he got there, a nurse could not help but fall in love with his sad face. She pictured his expression in a photo, shared it and it has since gone viral.

The post was also seen by Derek's school in India's Mizoram State and many were so impressed with his compassion that they handed him an award certificate for his kindness.

Another family friend Sanga Says posted the photo on Facebook after Derek's father Dhiraj Chhetri, a police officer, showed it to him and told him the heartwarming story. "I'm laughing and crying all at the same time. He did not understand that the chick is dead and begged his parents to take it to the hospital. His father told him to go himself, which he did with ten rupees,"" he wrote.

Eventually, the hospital staff told Derek they could not help the poor bird. Upon hearing this, he returned home in tears. But this did not deter the young boy. He was determined to go back and get help again, this time with 100 rupees in his hand.

Mr Sanga said his parents had to step in. They "had to explain to him that the chick is dead and that there's nothing they can do at the hospital."
