446 Nigerians imprisoned, 5021 granted amnesty in UAE - Ambassador

Mohammed Rimi, Nigeria’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has revealed that about 446 Nigerians are currently serving different jail terms in the middle-east prison facilities.

The ambassador disclosed this at a town-hall meeting between President Buhari and Nigerians in the UAE.

According to him, those imprisoned are there for various crimes which include possession of hard drug and engagement in robbery activities, The Guardian reports.

“It is disheartening to state that 446 Nigerians are currently serving different terms in prisons across UAE on account of committing various crimes including possession and consumption of hard substance and engagement in armed robbery,” he said.

Going further, the ambassador also disclosed that over 5000 Nigerians were granted amnesty by the UAE government.

He added that the population of Nigerians in the UAE is estimated at 10,000: “The number of Nigerians resident in the country is estimated at about 10,000. Out of this number, about 2,017 are students in various universities.”

“In 2018, a total of 5,774 standard passports were issued by the embassy, out of which, 3,164 were specifically issued during the amnesty programme. Further 1,346 emergency travelling certificates were issued to Nigerians to facilitate their return home,” Rimi said.

Meanwhile, President Buhari at the occasion said that the Next Level agenda of his administration will be focused on consolidating on what thye administration had done in the last four years.

“I seize every available opportunity to explain to Nigerians our situation in 2015, when we came to office; where we are today; and what we have been able to do with the resources available to us. We will continue to administer the resources of Nigeria honestly and productively,” Buhari said.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
