Why we didn't present a certificate of return to Okorocha - INEC

- The INEC has insisted that it would not recognise incumbent governor of Imo, Rochas Okorocha, as a senator-elect

- According to the electoral commission, the returning officer for Imo West senatorial district election declared Okorocha the winner under duress

- The commission said it would not condone any form of electoral malpractice

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday, March 18, again declared that it would not present a certificate of return to Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha.

INEC’s national commissioner, information and voter education, Festus Okoye, made this known during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

Okoye added that the electoral body took the decision because the returning officer for Imo West senatorial district election said that he declared Governor Okorocha as the winner “under duress”.

He said: “We’ve made it clear on why we didn’t present any certificate of return to him (Okorocha).

“If you look at our website, we said that the declaration and return were made under duress and that we are not going to give any certificate to any person for any individual that procured a return under duress."

He has warned politicians, especially those seeking to be elected into public offices that it would not condone any form of electoral malpractice.

In an earlier report, Governor Okorocha was said to have won the senatorial seat for Imo West zone.

Legit.ng reported that the INEC collation officer, Ibeawuchi Francis, announced Okorocha as winner after he scored a total of 97,762 votes to defeat his closest rival, Jones Onyereri of the PDP who scored 63,117 votes.
