Stay away from March 9 polls - NIS warns non-Nigerians, vows to apprehend offenders

- The Kano chapter of the NIS has warned non-Nigerians in the state to stay away from polling stations during the March 9 elections

- The agency said it would not hesitate to apprehend any non-Nigerian found on the voting queue during the polls

- The NIS is also collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission to ensure that national identity cards are not issued to non-Nigerians

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kano state, has warned non-Nigerians resident in the state to stay away from the Saturday, March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections or face the wrath of the law.

The state’s comptroller of NIS, Isiyaka Yusuf gave the warning when he visited members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Press Centre in Kano on Wednesday, March 6, NAN reports.

Legit.ng gathers that he said the warning became necessary as the agency would not hesitate to apprehend any non-Nigerian found on the voting queue during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

“The election is meant for Nigerians; so non-Nigerians are not expected to participate in the exercise,” he said.

According to him, the agency had met with the leaders of all non-Nigerians residents in the state with a view to enlightening them on the dangers of violating the law.

He said the meeting was organised to ensure strict adherence to the law, which prohibits any non-Nigerian from participating in elections in the country.

He said the agency has confiscated a number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC’s) across the country, stressing that the agency would continue to work with other security agencies to track down recalcitrant offenders.

The NIS boss said the agency was also working in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure that the national identity card was not issued to non-Nigerians.

“We have confiscated many national identity cards that were issued in error to non-Nigerians and it will be a continuous exercise,” he said.

Yusuf disclosed that the service had concluded arrangements for the commencement of e-registration for foreign nationals in the country.

He said the exercise, which was expected to commence in April, was aimed at ensuring that foreigners resident in the country were registered.

The NIS boss urged Nigerians to support the service in its renewed effort to reposition the service as well as protect the country and its citizenship.

In a similar development, Legit.ng previously reported that the comptroller general of the NIS, Lagos state command, Ekpedeme King, warned immigrants in the state not to vote in the 2019 polls.

King made this statement at a meeting with different associations of ECOWAS citizens in Lagos. He also urged the leaders to warn their people not to take part in the elections.

King said the warning came after some PVC’s were retrieved from some immigrants.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
