Senate gets petition against AIG, others over election crisis in Akwa Ibom

Senator Bassey Albert of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has submitted a a petition to the Senate against an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and other senior officers over allegations of election irregularities and crises in Akwa-Ibom state.

The senator urged the Senate to investigate to the crisis which claimed lives in the state and subsequent detention of over 200 Akwa Ibom persons.

He also alleged that over 100 thugs who were reportedly brought to the state from Edo state were intercepted and handed over to the police, but were later released by an AIG and three other senior police officers.

The Senate subsequently accepted the petition and sent it to the Ethics Committee for investigation and onward presentation to the upper legislative chamber within two weeks.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Akwa Ibom state house of assembly on Wednesday, March 13, passed the 2019 Appropriation Bill of N672.94bn billion, as against N646.65 billion for 2018.

The budget, as passed by the assembly has an increase of N2 billion from the amount submitted to the House by Gov. Udom Emmanuel, which was N670.72 billion.

The 2019 Budget is made up of N447.90 billion as Capital Expenditure, N97.39 billion for Recurrent Expenditure and N127.69 billion for Consolidated Revenue.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC ) has condemned the recent verbal attacks on the Akwa Ibom Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Iginni.

The council maintained that Mr. Igini deserves praise and gratitude and not condemnation from anyone or group.
