Re-run elections: IGP deploys 23 top officers to supervise polls across states

- Twenty three top officers have been deployed to supervise the forthcoming supplementary elections across many states in Nigeria

- Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector General of Police, charged them to remain patriotic but firm in their conducts and actions during the make-up elections

- Adamu also warned politicians not to undermine the electoral process by engaging in untoward practices

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered 23 top officers to supervise the forthcoming supplementary elections across states where the polls are expected to take place.

Among the top officers are five DIGs, three AIGs, fifteen additional CPs to provide supervision, direction and support to the existing security structure already in place in the states where the re-run election will take place.

The DIGs include DIG Usman Tilli Abubakar, mni – Adamawa state, DIG Yakubu Jubrin, fsi – Benue state, DIG Frederick Taiwo Lakanu, fdc – Plateau state, DIG Anthony Ogbizi Michael, fdc – Kano state and DIG Godwin C. Nwobodo, fdc – Bauchi state.

Out of the fifteen additional CPs deployed, three ach were deployed to Benue and Sokoto states, two each were deployed to Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano and Plateau states while Imo state got one.

Adamu charged them to remain patriotic, steadfast, professional, neutral and civil, but firm, in their conducts and actions during the make-up elections.

He warned politicians not to undermine the electoral process by engaging in untoward practices such as snatching of ballot boxes, vote trading and violence of all kinds, stressing that violators would be made to face the full consequences of the law.

The IGP also enjoined the public to cooperate with security operatives, noting that a total number of seven hundred and ninety six suspects were arrested for various electoral offences across the nation.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported Adamawa state high court in Yola ordered the INEC not to conduct the governorship supplementary election pending the determination of a counter affidavit filed by the electoral body challenging the statutory jurisdiction of the court to entertain a post-election matter.

Justice Abdulaziz Waziri adjourned the mater till Tuesday, March 26, for ruling. The judge cited personal health condition as the reason for the adjournment.

Speaking on the court’s decision, Tanimu Inuwa, counsel to INEC, said: "As far as I'm concerned, it is a normal day; we canvassed our position, because the plaintiff wanted to stop us from conducting the supplementary election on the ground that they claimed exclusion.''
