Professor Adesanmi's powerful message to Nigerian voters day before the deadly crash

Nigeria and the world are still mourning the death of Pius Adesanmi, a professor of English and director of the Institute of African Studies at Carleton University, Canada.

Adesanmi and another Nigerian identified as Ambassador Abiodun Bashua, were among the 157 persons on board an Ethiopian Airlines plane which crashed on Sunday, March 10.

A day before the deadly crash, Adesanmi took to Twitter to sarcastically enlighten Nigerians that wrongly use "casted" in a sentence instead of "cast".

He tweeted: "Folks, please, remember: "I cast my vote..." Any "I casted my vote" I see on my TL will be considered election violence. I reserve the right to defend myself."

Adesanmi, who was a writer and literary critic, satirist and columnist, never stopped condemning the rot in government.

Reacting to Adesanmi's death, the president and vice-chancellor of Carleton University, Benoit-Bacon, said: "Pius Adesanmi was a towering figure in African and post-colonial scholarship and his sudden loss is a tragedy.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those who knew and loved him, and with everyone who suffered loss in the tragic crash in Ethiopia.”

The dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Pauline Rankin, said: "The contributions of Pius Adesnami to Carleton are immeasurable.

“He worked tirelessly to build the Institute of African Studies, to share his boundless passion for African literature and to connect with and support students. He was a scholar and teacher of the highest calibre who leaves a deep imprint on Carleton.”

Legit.ng previously reported that Pius Adesanmi, popular Nigerian professor and columnist based in Canada, was reportedly on the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed in the early hours of Sunday, March 10.

Adesanmi, the author of Naija No Dey Carry Last, was a native of Isanlu, in Yagba East local government area of Kogi state.
