Police to beef up security with 15,544 officers during election in Rivers

- Over 15,000 officers would be deployed by the Rivers police command for the forthcoming governorship election in the state

- The police command said that over 1,500 personnel from other security agencies will also be engaged

- The force also mentioned that there will be restriction of movement during the electoral exercise in the state

The Rivers state police command has said that it will engage the service of 15,544 officers for this Saturday’s governorship and state Assembly elections.

Usman Balel, the state commissioner of police, disclosed the full details about the deployment in Port Harcourt on Thursday, March 7.

According to him, over 1,500 personnel from other security agencies would also be deployed., Leadership reports.

He also said movement will be restricted during the electoral exercise from 12:00 midnight on Friday, March 8 to 6pm on Saturday, March 9.

This development is coming after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state called on the Nigerian Army to release from detention the commissioner for education, Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja, and the coordinator of Arise Nigeria, Benjamin Diri

The PDP in the state said that Gogojaja and his family were taken away by military officers from 6 Division of the Nigerian Army who invaded his home on Wednesday, March 6.

The party made this known through a statement signed by Jerry Needam, the media aide to the party’s chairman, saying it totally condemned the how the military has overtaken the responsibility of the police in a very unfortunate manner.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Army handed over to the Nigeria Police Force 14 suspected political thugs allegedly involved in carrying out various electoral offenses in Rivers during the just-concluded presidential and National Assembly elections which held on February 23.

Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, spokesman of the Nigerian Army 6 Division, said nine of the suspects were arrested in Abonnema, Akuku Toru Local Government Area, while five others were apprehended in Iwofe Area of Port Harcourt.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year. This did not however, materialize. According to the release, the project will have a four to five-year execution time after the signing of the FID.
