Osun governor shuts down 3 tertiary institutions as violent protest breaks out in Ilesa

- Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun has shut down three tertiary institutions in the state, following a violent protest in Ilesa

- The governor said if the need arises, he won’t hesitate to take further drastic action in order to protect the lives and properties of the people

- It has not yet been confirmed if there was any life lost in the protest

Following a protest which turned violent in Ilesa, Osun state, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has ordered the closure of three tertiary institutions in the state.

The development was made public in a statement released by the governor’s chief press secretary, Adeniyi Adesina, Channels TV reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the affected tertiary institutions are Osun State College of Education, Ilesa; Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, and Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke.

The statement read: “Following the unwarranted destruction of public property by irate members of the public in Ilesa, Osun state Governor Adegboyega Oyetola on Monday night (March 18) ordered the closure of three higher institutions of learning.”

According to the government, the closure takes place with immediate effect.

The governor condemned the incident; stating that the disturbance of the peace in Ilesa was uncalled for.

He said if the need arises, he won’t hesitate to take further drastic action in order to protect the lives and properties of the people.

Oyetola frowned on the physical attack on newsmen on legitimate assignment whose equipment were also destroyed by the protesters.

He gave the assurance that the state government was on top of the security situation in Ilesa and in all parts of the state.

It has yet to be confirmed if there was any casualty in the incident.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor Gboyegba Oyetola debunked rumours of half salaries being paid to civil servants in Osun state.

The governor said the rumour was the work of the opposition party trying to incite civil servants against his government, adding that he was still committed to paying full salary to civil servants.
