Nigerian police officers to face mass demotion - Commission reveals why

- The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reportedly set in motion plans to demote some police officers in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF)

- Officers who are going to face the axe are those whose promotions have been adjudged to be undeserving

- The commission would also be promoting officers who were demoted for no justifiable reason

The Police Service Commission (PSC) is reportedly ready to demote some police officers in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

Those who fall into the category that may face the demotion are officers whose promotions have been tagged as “unmeritorious”, Daily Independent reports.

Investigations conducted by Daily Independent revealed that the PSC which sat on the matter on Tuesday, March 26 and Wednesday, March 27 reached the final decision to demote the affected officers.

The committee also approved the promotion of officers who deserved it but who were allegedly demoted.

It was also gathered that since Alhaji Musiliu Smith, the PSC chairman who also headed the session, came into office in July 2018, he had reportedly received several petitions from officers who had issues over promotion.

It was earlier reported that a source said that Smith vowed the petitions he received would not be ignored, saying he is going to critically examine the petition.

“We are going to critically examine the petitions. It is not going to be a total swipe, those who merit their promotions will retain their ranks,” the source added.

The PSC head appointed retired Supreme Court Justice Clara Ogunbiyi to head a committee responsible for the review of the “lopsided” promotions to show how serious he is with the petitions.

It should be recalled that Frederick Agbedi (PDP Bayelsa) earlier sponsored a motion titled: “Need to investigate the allegations of promotion of police officers by the Inspector-General of Police and the threat of demotion of the officers by the Police Service Commission.”

The lawmaker said that the police service commission needs to review the appointment of officers going by the allegation.

He said: “The power to appoint, promote, dismiss, and discipline officers of the Nigeria Police Force (other than the Inspector General of Police) falls within the exclusive purview of the Police Service Commission by virtue of the provision of section 153 (1) and paragraphs 30 of the 1999 constitution.

“By virtue of the provision of section 160 (1) of the constitution, the Police Service Commission is empowered to make rules to regulate its own procedures or confer power and impose duties on any officer or authority for the purpose of discharging its function and in the exercise of the power, the Police Service Commission, in 2014, approved the general promotion guideline for the promotion of the officers.”
