Nigerian newspaper review for March 25: APC's Ganduje, Lalong win, PDP's Tambuwal, Ortom re-elected

The main headlines of mainstream Nigerian newspapers of Monday, March 25, are focused on the governorship supplementary elections in Kano, Benue, Plateau and Sokoto states, where all the incumbents coasted home to victory.

The Punch reports that supplementary elections were held in Sokoto, Plateau, Kano, Benue and Bauchi, on Saturday, March 23, adding that the governors of Kano, Benue, Plateau and Sokoto won re-election.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state and his Benue state counterpart, Samuel Ortom, fought hard battles to emerge victorious at the governorship supplementary elections conducted in their states on Saturday.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau state, who contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also coasted home to victory.

Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje of the APC, was also re-elected by the people of the state.

The Nation also reports that Governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Umar Ganduje (Kano) and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto) were re-elected on Saturday, March 23.

The results have been rejected by their opponents, who now have plans to contest the results at the tribunal.

The opponents include Emmanuel Jime (Benue), Jeremiah Useni (Plateau), Aliyu Sokoto (Sokoto) and Abba Yusuf (Kano).

According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Ortom of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 434,473 to defeat his All Progressives Congress (APC) opponent Jime, who scored 345,155; Tambuwal of the PDP scored 512,002 to beat APC’s Sokoto, who polled 511,660.

The Guardian reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the governorship supplementary elections held in Benue, Sokoto and Bauchi states, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Kano and Plateau states.

The APC in Sokoto state rejected the results after Governor Aminu Tambuwal defeated Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The spokesman for APC in Sokoto state, Bello Danchadi, said: “We draw the attention of INEC to a number of polling units that were cancelled as a result of violent attacks by thugs, while others were arbitrarily cancelled to please certain political party interests.

"In view of these, we deem it necessary to express our disagreement with the action taken by INEC to declare a winner without giving us a fair hearing on our position in the electoral processes."

The victory of the candidates of Sokoto and Benue states was described by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, as an acknowledgement from the Nigerian people that it is the only truly national party in Nigeria.

According to Vanguard, there was palpable tension in the city of Kano on Sunday, March 24, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Governor Umar Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the governorship election which was concluded on Saturday, March 23.

Ganduje polled 1,033,695 votes to defeat Alhaji Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 1,024,713 votes.

The electoral umpire returned Ganduje as winner of the election amid complaints of manipulation, violence and calls by the PDP on INEC to cancel the supplementary election.
