Lionel Messi scores brace as Barcelona beat Espanyol in La Liga match

Spanish champions Barcelona on Saturday, March 30, extended their lead on the La Liga standings after beating Espanyol 2-0 at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona were made to go through lots of trouble by their visitors before scoring the winning goal thanks to Lionel Messi.

Espanyol had the first chance to score in the 4th minute when Naldo sent a long ball to Victor Sanchez, but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Marc Stegen.

And five minutes later, Ivan Rakitic brilliantly set up Lionel Messi, but his shot was blocked by defender Mario Hermoso.

Victor Sanchez of Espanyol was presented with a shooting opportunity in the 20th minute only for the strike to be blocked by Gerard Pique as the first half ended goalless.

Barcelona changed their style of play in the second half, but they had to wait till the 71st minute before Lionel Messi scored the opener.

Espanyol were trying to restore parity towards the end of the match before Malcom provided a stunning assist for Lionel Messi to score another goal in the 89th minute as Barcelona won 2-0.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Lionel Messi's goal against Getafe in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey 2006/07 season has been voted by fans as the best goal so far in the history of Spanish champions Barcelona.

More than 500,000 votes were cast in the past three months which helped the officials in charge to know the goal that made the fans happy.

And after 60 eliminatory rounds, four goals of which three from Lionel Messi and one from Sergi Roberto qualified for the final stage during the past week.
