According to a report by CBS News on Thursday, March 21, Jimmy Carter will now add another title to his achievements after he was recognised as longest-living US president.

"We at The Carter Center are grateful for his long life of service that has benefited millions of the world's poorest people," Deanna Congileo, a spokeswoman for the Carter Center said.

As of Thursday evening, March 21, the 39th president of the US was 94 years and 172 days old surpassing George H W Bush, who died in November 2018, at 94 years and 171 days old.

Carter, the first American president born in a hospital, turned 94 in October 2018. He was Georgia's 76th governor before winning the presidency in 1976 as a Democrat.

He was 52-years-old when he took office in 1977, and 56 years-old when he left the White House four years later, in 1981.

As president, he oversaw the Panama Canal treaties as well as the passage of educational programs and environmental protection legislation, such as the Alaska Lands Conservation Act.

After his presidency, Carter was dubbed the "active ex-president," and received a Nobel Prize in 2002.

Carter's work on the Camp David Peace Accords, where he mediated a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel beginning in 1978, became one of his major foreign policy undertakings.

He also faced some major setbacks in foreign policy, one being the conflict in Iran after the fall of the Shah that led to the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

After his presidency, Carter was dubbed the "active ex-president," received a Nobel Prize in 2002 and cemented the title with his continued participation in Habitat for Humanity through the Carter Work Project.

In 2015, Carter, then 91, announced that he had advanced cancer and had a mass removed from his liver. He later said that the disease had spread to other parts of his body.

"I have had a wonderful life. I'm ready for anything and I'm looking forward to new adventure. It is in the hands of God, whom I worship," he said.

A few months later, he made a surprise announcement during a Sunday school class in Georgia, saying that an MRI scan showed that his cancer was gone.
