Elections 2019: Group demands probe into police officers' conduct, Akwa Ibom CP's removal

- The talk is still on as to the alleged negative conducts of security personnel during the general elections in some states in Nigeria

- For instance, the Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement (AILM) has called on the Police Service Commission (PSC) to redeploy its commissioner in the state, Kaoje Ibrahim

- The AILM also urged the commission to carry out investigation into the activities of officers deployed in the state during the polls

The Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement (AILM), a leading pressure group, has appealed to the Police Service Commission (PSC) to redeploy its commissioner in the state, Kaoje Ibrahim, as well as carry out an investigation into the conduct of officers during the general polls.

The AILM alleged that Ibrahim compromised police affairs and also used a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Udom Ekpudom, and junior personnel in the elections, Vanguard reports.

The group, speaking to the Police Service Commission (PSC), in a letter signed by Prince Emmanuel Sam, it leader, alleged that CP Ibrahim was guilty of partiality and political bias.

The letter partly read: “The Akwa Ibom CP has not shown courage, independence and strength expected of an officer of that professional height.

"Since he got his posting to Akwa Ibom State, CP Ibrahim has shown that he has subjected himself to external influence, particularly to DIG Udom Ekpudom (rtd), who has become the de facto Police Commissioner.”

In the statement, the group claimed that the CP lacks what it takes to ensure the security of lives residents and indigenes in the state and should therefore be redeployed as soon as possible.

The statement said: “The commissioner has been so partial in his dealings against the standard practice of the force. Few days to the elections, the General public were alerted of the planned movement of some APC thugs from Edo State into Akwa Ibom.

"Few hours after the alert, youths from the border community of Obot Akara, arrested 15 loaded buses with thugs who confessed they were heading to Uyo for burial of an unknown person.

“Barely 24 hours after the same thugs were arrested and handed over to the police in Uyo, they were released on the orders of the CP who was said to have directed the command PPRO, Odiko MacDon to issue a statement claiming that the thugs caught were in the State to attend APC youth rally, whereas the APC had issued a press release denying knowledge of such people.

“It is sad to disclose that there has been reported increase in house-to-house robbery in the State. This cannot be divorced from the huge infiltration of the State by those suspected thugs and importation of arms during the election.”

“Akwa Ibom people cannot work with a commissioner of police who is known for partiality, therefore, we demand for his redeployment.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa, had urged Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, the chief of Army staff, to probe the alleged role of the military in the violence that pervaded the state during the polls.

Claiming that some soldiers were involved in the elections, the PDP in the state called on the Nigerian Army to look into the issue.
