Election 2019: INEC to fix dates for rerun polls in 6 states on Tuesday, March 12

- The INEC leadership will meet on Tuesday, March 12 to fix dates for re-run elections in six states

- The states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Kano, Plateau and Sokoto

- That of Rivers will also be determined as it was suspended due to violence by the electoral commission

The national leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will meet on Tuesday, March 11 to fix dates for re-run elections in six states.

The states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Kano, Plateau and Sokoto where the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) declared the exercise inconclusive.

That of Rivers state will also be determined as it was suspended due to violence by the electoral commission.

According to the electoral act, the commission has 21 days to complete elections in areas or states where the processes have been declared inconclusive.

In some states, the final results were either not announced or the leading candidate did not have a convincing margin of votes. In some other states, the number of voided votes and the figure required for a winner to be declared was below the cancelled votes thereby warranting a rerun.

INEC national commissioner and chairman of Information and voter education committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, confirmed to LEADERSHIP newspaper on Monday, March 11 that the commission would today take a stand on the states where elections have been declared inconclusive.

Okoye said: “As at now, collation is still ongoing in some states. We are still monitoring the situation. We are also in contact with the RECs where the elections were declared inconclusive.

“By tomorrow (today) we will take a stand on when the supplementary elections will hold in these states.”

Meanwhile, Engr. Awara Biokpomabo, the governorship candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), has asked INEC to declare him the winner of the governorship election in Rivers state.

Biokpomabo made the demand on Monday March 11 at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

The AAC candidate claimed that before the suspension, in some other local government areas, results had already been collated and declared, adding that he was in clear lead and was coasting to victory.
