Chelsea star retires prematurely from international football after playing in 3 major finals

- Gonzalo Higuain has called it quits with international football with Argentina

- The 31-year-old has played 75 games and scored 31 goals for the Albiceleste

- Higuain missed winning the three finals with the Lionel Messi led Argentina

Gonzalo Higuain he announced his retirement from international football with his country Argentina.

The Chelsea loanee has made 75 appearances for the Albiceleste scoring 31 goals but has not played since their ouster at the 2018 World Cup.

"I've made the decision because I want to enjoy my family, I want to spend time with my daughter and at the same time I feel that I gave my country everything I could," Higuain said.

"I'm fully focused on my commitment to Chelsea.

"The Premier League is amazing and I really want to enjoy it. It's very competitive indeed."

The 31-year-old has played in three major competitions with Argentina including the 2014 World Cup and back to back Copa America in 2015 and 2016.

But the former Juventus star has come under huge criticisms whenever his misses goal scoring opportunities for Argentina.

An example was when he missed a golden opportunity in the 2014 World Cup final defeat to Germany.

He also missed a penalty during normal time of the 2015 Copa America final loss against Chile before also missing in the shootouts.

"People remember the goals I missed and not the ones I scored. I'm sure everyone celebrated the goal against Belgium [the winner in the 2014 World Cup quarter-final]," he told Fox Sports.

"When you criticise someone maliciously it hurts everyone. I saw how much my family suffered, but I gave everything for the national team.

"It's one thing to say that the national team did not achieve our objectives, but when people talk about failure it's very hard."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Gonzalo Higuain's performance against Huddersfield Town in the Premier League has been applauded by his teammate Eden Hazard.

Higuain and Eden Hazard paired together up front for Chelsea in their 5-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield in which these two players scored a brace each.
