Breaking: 2 suspected Boko Haram bombers strike at Catholic Church in Adamawa

Two suspected Boko Haram bombers who reportedly targeted St. Pious Catholic Church in Shuwa, Madagali local government area of Adamawa state, have detonated their bombs, according to Sahara Reporters.

The newspaper reports that the bombers' mission, however, failed as they ended up killing themselves only.

Papka Medugu, a parishioner who reportedly witnessed the incident, said on Sunday morning, March 10, that suspected Boko Haram members "targeted our church while the morning mass was going on, but to God's glory they both exploded before they could access the church".

"Vigilant Catholic cadet boys on patrol around the church vicinity prevented the bombers from gaining entry into the church, thereby forcing the explosives to detonate before getting to their target," Medugu was quoted to have said, adding that only the two bombers were killed in the incident.

The newspaper added that Most Reverend Stephen Dami Mamza, Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, also confirmed the attack.

Mamza said: "Catholic cadets stopped them at the main entrance. The bombers arrived 30 minutes into the mass which started around 6am. When they could not access the church, they detonated, but thank God none of the cadets were hurt. Only a grandmother and her grandson were shocked by the loud bang, but they have since left the hospital."

He further said that armed military personnel were drafted to the scene within minutes of the attack and have since cordoned off the area to recover possible unexploded devices.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Gaidam town in Yobe shortly before the commencement of 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections.

The attackers were sighted at Maladari, a village located 6km to Gaidam around 3am.

“They arrived Gaidam around 6:15am and began shooting sporadically.

“Residents including traditional rulers had fled the town. I’m currently taking refuge at Bukarti, the state governor’s village but we were told that the attackers are on their way here,” a resident who simply gave his name as Muhammad said.

He said that many residents that fled the town are in the bush with their wives and children without direction.

“We are suffering, we don’t know what to do,” he added.
