Barred Rivers APC candidate calls for fresh governorship election in Rivers

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who was barred from participating in the 2019 gubernatorial election in Rivers state has called for a fresh election for the governorship seat in the state, Daily Independent reports.

Tonye Cole said he lacked of confidence in the system by the two major parties involved in the contest, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Action Congress (AAC).

In a statement released on Thursday, March 28, Cole warned that any result emerging from the process commenced on March 9 will not be acceptable to the losing party.

Stating that he was however silent on his own involvement in a fresh election, Cole said the mutual suspicion between the two parties and the acrimony that has followed is suspicious and totally compromised.

Cole said: “If there is one thing that I am certain of, it is that the entire election of March 9th is totally and completely compromised from head to toe. There are no results that would be announced today that would reflect the will of the people in any form or manner”.

“There are just as many people who do not trust and will not accept an election that delivers PDP today because of the belief that the umpire has granted unfettered access to the result sheets and a yeoman’s job has been done on the collated results that is guaranteed to withstand any scrutiny through the Election Tribunals or any court of law thereafter just as there are as many people who will not accept a result that delivers the AAC because of the belief that the election day results were structured to favour them by the direct involvement of the military as insinuated by the PDP," Cole said.

The APC candidate further called on INEC to declare the entire elections of March 9, null and void and set out a new date for fresh elections.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Rivers chapter of Foundation Watch Association (FWA) has urged the INEC to declare Governor Nyesom Wike winner of the state governorship election.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 26, FWA coordinator, Chidi George, said it was high time the electoral umpire declared the governor winner in order to douse the escalating tension generated by the election situation in the oil producing state, Independent reports.

George, who claimed that the people of Rivers "willingly" voted Governor Wike, warned INEC against creating undue tension and acrimony due to its failure to announce winners of elections in the state.
