Accept defeat in good faith, don’t subject Enugu guber result to litigation - Lawmaker advises politicians

A member of Enugu state House of Assembly, Matthew Ugwueze, has appealed to politicians who lost in the 2019 general elections in the state, especially the governorship to accept the outcome of the exercise and desist from contesting the result in court.

Legit.ng regional reporter in Enugu, Ikpechukwu Chinedu, reports that Ugwueze, who is the chairman, House committee on education and science and technology, made the call at a media interaction in Enugu.

He congratulated the governor-elect and governor of the state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and all the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for recording impressive victory in the recently-conducted federal and state elections.

Ugwueze, who represents Igbo-Eze south constituency in the state Assembly, said the appeal became essential considering that greater part of Governor Ugwuanyi’s first tenure had witnessed a lengthy legal battle up to the Supreme Court, stressing that the extensive litigation left enormous adverse effects on the state.

He praised all the contestants who lost the governorship election for their dexterity, peaceful conduct and display of sportsmanship throughout the entire exercise.

He also prayed God to continue to keep Enugu firmly in His hands, and assured the people of the state of more inclusive governance, even people-oriented policies, programmes and projects from Ugwuanyi in his second tenure.

“I appeal to our brothers and sisters who lost the election, especially the governorship, to calm down, join others to accept the result and support the governor-elect to take Enugu state to the next level of development, peace and inclusive governance.

“Let us refrain from distracting the incoming administration with litigation. Governor Ugwuanyi’s first tenure was in court for almost four years before it was settled at the Supreme Court. That was after it had left monumental setback and economic losses to the state,” he said.

It was gathered that the lawmaker had aimed to retain his seat at the state Assembly in the just-concluded election but lost at the primaries.

The lawmaker was said to have accepted his fate and closed ranks with his party and later appointed the campaign coordinator for Governor Ugwuanyi’s reelection, for Igbo-Eze south local government area and subsequently recorded the highest votes ever in the history of the council area.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the people of Oduma-Achara community in Aninri local government area of Enugu state appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to intervene in the allegation of over N5 million development fund that is tearing the community apart.
