2016 US presidential election: Trump finally cleared of alleged conspiracy with Russia

- Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report has cleared US president, Donald Trump, of alleged conspiracy with the Russia

- The US president had been accused of conspiring with Russia, another world power, for his victory during the 2016 presidential election

- In a reaction, US lawmakers belonging to Democratic party raised questions of doubt on Mueller's report

A summary of a report by the Special Counsel Robert Mueller has cleared US president, Donald Trump, of an alleged conspiracy with Russia for his victory during the 2016 presidential election.

Recall that there was growing calls by the opposition Democrats to begin full investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the presidential election in the United States.

Trump defeated the Democratic party candidate, Hillary Clinton, raising questions from the side of the opposition that the US president conspired with the Russia, another world power, to achieve his victory.

Although President Trump had repeatedly described the inquiry as a shameful witch hunt and ''illegal takedown that failed,'' the Democrat's call for inquiry has forced Mueller into two years of critical investigation, BBC claims.

Legit.ng gathers that some of the president's closest former aides were prosecuted and imprisoned, though on charges not related to the alleged Russian collusion.

Presenting the Mueller report to the congress, Attorney General William Barr said: ''The special counsel did not find that any US person or Trump campaign official conspired or knowingly co-ordinated with Russia.

"While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him."

The Democratic House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, in a joint reaction, however, described Barr's report as partially convincing and doubtful, adding that his letter "raises as many questions as it answers."

Part of the statement read: ''For the president to say he is completely exonerated directly contradicts the words of Mr Mueller and is not to be taken with any degree of credibility.

"Barr says that the president may have acted to obstruct justice, but that for an obstruction conviction, 'the government would need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person, acting with corrupt intent, engaged in obstructive conduct.''

In another subsequent reaction on Sunday, March 24, President Trump hit back at the Democrats, adding that "No collusion, No obstruction. Complete and total exoneration."

The Democratic senator, Richard Blumenthal, who is also a member of the Senate's Judiciary Committee, also commented that while there was a lack of evidence to support "a prosecutable criminal conspiracy," questions remained over whether President Trump had been compromised.
