Youths take protest to Kaduna government house, demand Onnoghen's resignation

As the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as Nigeria's chief justice continues to generate controversy, protesters have stormed the Kaduna state Government House to demand the resignation and subsequent prosecution of the suspended chief justice.

Channels reports that the protesters are under the umbrella of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Kaduna state.

Legit.ng gathers that the group, which comprised of women and youths, said the honourable thing Onnoghen should have was to resign as chief justice of Nigeria so as to save himself from further embarrassment.

Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, January 25, over non-declaration of assets.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a pro-President Muhammadu Buhari group, Buhari Media Organisation (BMO), said the ruling of the Court of Appeal that directed that the suspended Chief of Justice (CJN) Walter Onnoghen must face trial before the code of conduct tribunal absorbs Buhari of any blame for his decision.

The group in a statement through its chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and the secretary, Cassidy Madueke, said that the ruling of the court shows that Onnoghen needs to face trial and that the tribunal does not lack the jurisdiction to preside over the case.

BMO also said the court’s decision further portrays that the call by Paul Usoro (SAN), the chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), asking lawyers to boycott the courts is a reflection of the ignorance of the SAN in the understanding of how the rule of law and jurisdiction work.

The group said: “The call by Paul Usoro (SAN), chairman of the NBA that the courts be boycotted showed that the man who heads the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) lacks an understanding of basic principles of the rule of law and does not appreciate the issue of jurisdiction of courts to matters.

“We also commend the various NBA branches that did not heed the senseless call for a boycott, but went ahead to attend court sessions and honour their clients and the temple of justice.

“This also shows that Paul Usoro has lost his credibility in the NBA due to his proclivity to defend corruption and stand for what is wrong – a characteristic that should not be synonymous with the Nigerian Bar Association.”

The pro-Buhari group also used the opportunity to ask the NBA chairman to deal with the corruption charges he is facing with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a person with corruption allegation is unfit to sit over cases.
