Wike reacts over death of Nigerians at APC presidential rally in Port Harcourt

- Governor Nyesom Wike has spoken about the tragic death of some members of the APC in a stampede at the presidential campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers

- Wike claimed that no fewer than 17 people were left dead in the incident

- The governor's claim, however, contradicts earlier report of the police indicating that four persons were killed while four others were injured

The Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, February 13, alleged that 17 people were killed during a stampede that occurred at the presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports by Channels TV claimed that Wike made this known while addressing a crowd of party supporters in Port Harcourt.

The figures, however, go against the report of the police which had earlier indicated that four persons were killed while four others were injured.

The governor asked those singing “war songs” ahead of the elections to be ready to send their own children to lead the battle.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that four people lost their lives at the APC presidential rally held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The reported had it that cores of persons sustained various degrees of injuries and have been evacuated to hospital for treatment, our correspondent learnt.

A witness account said that the victims were trapped at the exit gate of Adoki Amasiemeka Stardium as they tried to walk out of the stadium.

Sources In a related development, reports emerging from the presidential rally of the Democratic Party from the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos claimed that a set of hoodlums made moves to trigger violence.

There was reportedly an uproar among some youths who were throwing objects and chairs at themselves close to where PDP chieftains were seated.

In a related development, President Buhari expressed sadness over the tragic death of some members of the All Progressives Congress in a stampede at the presidential campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers.

The president reacted through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, saying he was extending his deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims. In the statement, Buhari also wished a speedy recovery to all those injured.

The president described the deaths “needless loss of lives and an anti-climax to a highly successful outing.” He said the incident could have been averted if there was an orderly exit from the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
