Why we dumped Donald Duke, support Buhari’s re-election - SDP

- The Social Democratic Party (SDP) announced that it was adopting President Buhari as its candidate

- The party said this was due to the legal tussle between its candidates for the presidential candidacy

- The SDP also said it has little time to campaign

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has explained that it decided to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari and support his re-election bid because the party was engaged in legal tussle.

Professor Jerry Gana and Donald Duke had both claimed legitimacy to the presidential candidacy of the party before it formally adopted President Buhari on Thursday, February 7.

Daily Independent reports that the party said its decision was necessary as it was yet to make a choice between the two candidates.

The national chairman of SDP, Chief Olu Falae was absent although he was represented at the all-important NEC meeting by the party’s deputy national chairman (South), Professor Tunde Adeniran.

The party said that “its inability to present and campaign for a presidential candidate due to the lingering legal battle between a former governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Donald Duke, and the winner of the SDP presidential primaries and his major challenger, a former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, contributed to the decision to endorse Buhari.”

“We cannot campaign, we cannot do anything because of the protracted legal tussle that has rocked the party. We, therefore, feel that it is imperative to technically withdraw from the presidential election and focus on the National Assembly, governorship and state assemblies elections, for which we have fielded candidates across the country.”
