US don gives reasons why APC won 2015 elections

- A US professor, Carl LeVan has given reasons why the APC won the 2015 elections

- LeVan said based on his findings, while most political parties campaigned on different issues in 2015, the APC placed emphasis on the economy, corruption and electoral integrity

- The professor also stated that conditions that facilitated the 1999 transition are sources of democratic stress today

Carl LeVan, an assistant professor in the School of International Service at American University, Washington DC, USA, has disclosed his thoughts on the reason the 2015 election was won by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He made the disclosure during a discussion on his new book titled, ‘Contemporary Nigerian Politics: Competition in a Time of Transition and Terror’ in Abuja, the nation's capital on Monday, February 18, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the discussion took place during an event organised by Nextier SPD.

LeVan said based on his findings, while most political parties campaigned on different issues in 2015, the APC placed emphasis on the economy, corruption and electoral integrity.

Hinging his analysis on three stages, LeVan said the conditions that shaped voting outcome at the state level include state-level economic condition, even more than levels of violence.

He explained that in 2015, while the electorate voted on an individual level, "people still voted on the economy but ethnicity remained salient with a strong influence of religion."

He further stated that "conditions that facilitated the 1999 transition are sources of democratic stress today."

The APC was formed on February 6, 2013, in anticipation of the 2015 general elections.

The party's presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, won the presidential election in 2015, unseating the incumbent president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said her husband was sidelined by the ruling party after it won the 2015 presidential election.

The senator alleged that Tinubu was sidelined, despite his efforts towards ensuring that APC won the poll.

Oluremi said though she raised concerns over her husband’s continued loyalty to the party after been sidelined by the presidency and the APC, the party leader was always talking about the development of the country.
