Those who incite violence during Nigeria’s elections must be held accountable - US declares

- The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has called for those who incite violence during Nigeria’s elections to be held accountable

- Pompeo said the US govt supports a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful election that reflects the will of the Nigerian people

- The secretary of state added that Nigerian security services must provide a safe and secure environment for citizens to exercise their rights

Ahead of Nigeria’s general elections, the United States has called for those who incite violence during the polls to be held accountable.

The call was made by the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, who stated that the upcoming elections are an opportunity for Nigeria to solidify its place as the democratic leader in Africa, The Cable reports.

Legit.ng gathers that in a statement released by the US Department of State, Pompeo urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to operate in a totally objective manner, free from outside pressure and intimidation.

He said: “The United States government supports a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful election that reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

“It is critical that the Independent National Electoral Commission operates free from outside pressure and intimidation and in a totally objective manner.

“Nigerian security services must provide a safe and secure environment for the Nigerian people to exercise their rights. Those who interfere in the electoral process or incite violence must be held to account.

“The upcoming elections are an opportunity for Nigeria to solidify its place as a democratic leader in Africa.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that an American congressman, Christopher Smith, urged President Donald Trump to use his sanctioning authority to hold accountable, any Nigerian official who subverts the 2019 electoral process or foments violence against citizens.

Smith, who is the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, gave the advice in a statement published on his personal website.

The lawmaker also lamented over the herdsmen attacks in the north-central geopolitical zone, the harassment of opposition members and the crackdown on protesters in Nigeria.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
