Super Eagles captain Mikel named 'African Zidane' as fans surprise him (video)

- John Obi Mikel was given heroic treatment by Middlesbrough fans after putting up an impressive performance against Blackburn Rovers over the weekend

- The Boro claimed maximum points on the road with Britt Assombalonga scoring the only goal of the game

- After the win, they moved to playoffs zone, as they stand a chance of returning to Premier League next season

Middlesbrough fans showered encomiums on Super Eagles star John Obi Mikel after an impressive performance in their 1-0 away won over Blackburn Rovers over the weekend.

Britt Assombalonga's lone goal handed the Riverside Stadium outfit maximum points at Ewood Park.

The 31-year-old joined the Championship side on a free transfer earlier this year from Tianjin TEDA where he scored three goals in 31 appearances.

After the match, a lot of Boro's fans took to social media to express their love for the Nigeria international, as they called him 'African Zidane'.

Mikel Obi posted a video of two little girls, who chanted his name after the game saying: "Beyond adorable ♥️ Cute performance, thank you to these two little stars . So much love and support from our Boro fans for the team and myself ⚽️ #amazing ."

The little girls had recorded a performance praising the former Chelsea man, they called him the African Zidane.

"We've got Mikel, John Obi Mikel, I just don't think you understand, he is the man, the African Zidane, he is John Obi Mikel."

Middlesbrough, on their part, refer to him as "A Rolls-Royce of a midfielder , WE’VE GOT MIKEL #UTB."

Another fan said on his Twitter handle (@OffficialZoba): "Middlesbrough fans hailing and chanting praises to Jon Obi Mikel. Something Chelsea fans couldn't do for over 12+ year. The call him Our African Zidane The call him Our Midfield King.

"Regardless of him play in the Championship, he is better than Jorginho + Barkley + Kovacic!"

Legit.ng recalls that John Obi Mikel has finally been unveiled by Championship side Middlesbrough after sealing six-month loan deal with the club.

The Super Eagles captain recently ended his spell with Chinese Super Lig outfit Tianjin TEDA after two years with the Asian side.

He is now having a second spell in England but this time with Tony Pulis' Boro who are aiming to make a return to topflight action in the Premier League next season.
