Presidential poll: Union hails Buhari’s victory, urges him to complete unfinished projects

- President Muhammadu Buhari has been congratulated by the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria for winning the presidential election

- According to the association, Buhari's victory has strengthened democracy in the country

- The union, however, tells Buhari to complete unfinished projects across Nigeria

The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election, urging him to complete projects that are yet to be completed.

The general secretary of the union, Frances Akinjole, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview in Lagos on Thursday, February 28, that Buhari’s victory has strengthened democracy in Nigeria.

Legit.ng recalls that Buhari, who ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), garnered 15.1 million votes to defeat his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 11.2 million votes in Saturday, February 23 presidential election.

Akinjole said that although the president had achieved remarkable achievements in the past four years, more needed to be done especially in completing the unfinished projects.

“I want to believe that the re-election of Buhari will be a government of continuity of projects that had yet to be completed.

“It is our hope that this government, having been elected for another four years, will be able to complete them.

“I want to believe that the president will not want to abandon the good projects this government had embarked on.

“Even the projects he started when he came into power and what he met half done, he has been making every endeavour to complete."

Akinjole said the government should not revisit the concessioned airport projects, because the unions have yet to agree to it.

He said the unions in the sector do not want to have the feeling that this government might want to reopen the issue since the president was no longer seeking for another term.

The official said even if the government wanted to go ahead with it, the government should give them a practical assurance that the workers would not be negatively affected.

He said the unions were aspiring for the development of the airports so that they could meet with the international standard.

Akinjole said: “We aspire for the development of our airports because we want them to be rated among the best in the world.

“We want an airport where there will not be emergency shutdown of power supply because we have experienced such in recent times.

“We want the infrastructure to be further improved and the runways to be properly maintained. Our personnel should be trained and retained.

“Our international wings are the first points of call for any foreigner coming into our country and if this government believes more in foreign direct investment, it should do more in uplifting the faces of our various airports."

Oshiomhole said there was apprehension before the election over who was going to win.

The APC chairman who spoke to State House correspondents after congratulating Buhari, said: “I wasn’t sure of who was going to win, only God knows until the votes were counted. But whichever way, I was sure that once the election goes the way it has gone, Nigeria is the winner and Nigerians are winners.”

The Transitional Phase of African Poetry

The Transitional Phase The second phase, which we have chosen to call transitional, is represented by the poetry of writers like Abioseh Nicol, Gabriel Okara, Kwesi Brew, Dennis Brutus, Lenrie Peters and Joseph Kariuki. This is poetry which is written by people we normally refer to as modem and who may be thought of as belonging to the third phase. The characteristics of this poetry are its competent and articulate use of the received European language, its unforced grasp of Africa’s physical, cultural and socio-political environment and often its lyricism. To distinguish this type of poetry we have to refer back to the concept of appropriation we introduced earlier. At the simplest and basic level, the cultural mandate of possessing a people’s piece of the earth involves a mental and emotional homecoming within the physical environment. Poems like Brew’s ‘‘Dry season”, Okara’s “Call of the River Nun”, Nicol’s “The meaning of Africa” and Soyinka’s “Season”, to give a few examples,

The pioneering phase of African Poetry

The pioneering phase We have called the first phase that of the pioneers. But since the phrase “pioneer poets” has often been used of writers of English expression like Osadebay, Casely-Hayford and Dei-Anag, we should point out that our “pioneer phase” also includes Negritude poets of French expression. The poetry of this phase is that of writers in “exile” keenly aware of being colonials, whose identity was under siege. It is a poetry of protest against exploitation and racial discrimination, of agitation for political independence, of nostalgic evocation of Africa’s past and visions of her future. However, although these were themes common to poets of both English and French expression, the obvious differences between the Francophone poets and the Anglophone writers of the 1930s and 1940s have been generally noted. Because of the intensity with which they felt their physical exile from Africa, coupled with their exposure to the experimental contemporary modes of writing in F
