- Cross River state police has urged residents to submit their illegal arms before election
- A window period has been created for resident with illegal fire arms to surrender it without repercussion
The commissioner of police in Cross River state, CP Hafiz Inuwa has called on residents in possession of illegal arms to surrender them to the police.
He made the call in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, on Friday, February 1, in Calabar.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Inuwa said the command had intelligence information about some unscrupulous politicians plotting to scuttle the 2019 general elections.

He said that an arms mop up operation would be conducted to retrieve illegal weapons in circulation, halt the ongoing proliferation of weapons, and restore law and order in the state.
The police boss called on residents to take advantage of the voluntary arms surrender window to return illegal weapons in their possession.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday, January 25, said it would take appropriate disciplinary measures against any police personnel caught compromising the integrity of the forthcoming general election.

Najaatu Mohammed, a member of the commission, said the police must remain apolitical and discharge their duties diligently and professionally.
The commissioner also urged all other stakeholders to operate within the confines of the law, so as to make policing the elections easier.
