At the close of her recent visit to Turkey, Callamard, who is also the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, concluded: "Evidence collected during my mission to Turkey shows prima facie case that Mr Khashoggi was the victim of a brutal and premeditated killing, planned and perpetrated by officials of the state of Saudi Arabia."

Although officials of the Turkish government claimed that Khashoggi was strangled by a gang of 15 Saudis, media reports insisted that his body was cut up and dissolved in acid, NDTV reports.

However, after denying the criminal act for two weeks, Riyadh referred to it as a "rogue" operation and arrested some senior personnel.

"The murder of Jamal Khashoggi and the sheer brutality of it has brought irreversible tragedy to his loved ones.

"It is also raising a number of international implications which demand the urgent attention of the international community including the United Nations," Callamard said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a CNN report had claimed that the last words of the late journalist and Saudi critic were "I can't breathe."

A continual audio investigation into the death of the late Washington Post columnist also showed that there were unintelligible screams and gasps. Legit.ng gathers from the reports that the killing of Khashoggi was premeditated, contrary to the claims by Saudi that the journalist lost his life during a brawl.

The Transitional Phase of African Poetry

The Transitional Phase The second phase, which we have chosen to call transitional, is represented by the poetry of writers like Abioseh Nicol, Gabriel Okara, Kwesi Brew, Dennis Brutus, Lenrie Peters and Joseph Kariuki. This is poetry which is written by people we normally refer to as modem and who may be thought of as belonging to the third phase. The characteristics of this poetry are its competent and articulate use of the received European language, its unforced grasp of Africa’s physical, cultural and socio-political environment and often its lyricism. To distinguish this type of poetry we have to refer back to the concept of appropriation we introduced earlier. At the simplest and basic level, the cultural mandate of possessing a people’s piece of the earth involves a mental and emotional homecoming within the physical environment. Poems like Brew’s ‘‘Dry season”, Okara’s “Call of the River Nun”, Nicol’s “The meaning of Africa” and Soyinka’s “Season”, to give a few examples,
