FG to order immediate shut down of illegal universities, polytechnics

- Adamu Adamu has said there will be a crackdown on some illegal higher universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and specialised technical and vocational institutions in the country

- Adamu, the minister of education, said the illegal higher institutions include 66 universities and 68 polytechnics are to be shutdown by the federal government in a new crackdown

- According to the minister, Nigerians should assist in exposing these higher institutions whenever they are found

Emerging reports have claimed that the federal government of Nigeria has declared that it would start demolishing illegal tertiary institutions across the country.

According to an online medium, Sahara Reporters, Adamu Adamu, the country's minister of education, who made this known in Abuja, stating the institutions constitute a threat to the education system of the country.

He said: ''Nigerians should assist in exposing these higher institutions whenever they are found, with a view to dealing with the menace. Where necessary we shall demolish such institutions."

It was learnt that some of the institutions earlier listed are: University of Accountancy and Management Studies; University of Industry, Yaba, Lagos; Blacksmith University, Awka; Atlanta University, Anyigba; UNESCO University, Ndoni, River state.

Others are Columbus University, London External Studies; Pebbies University, UK; Tiu International University.

The institutions also include Adonai Polytechnic, Benue; Al-Ameen College of Health Sciences and Technology, Kaduna state; Assam School of Basic Health Science and Technology, Kaduna; Bethel Polytechnic, Benue state and Grand Royal College of Health Technology, Ekiti state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the National Universities Commission released the list of 58 illegal universities in Nigeria.

According to the commission, the listed universities are yet to be licensed by the federal government and have been shut down for violating the national minimum standard for education.

The commission, in bulletin released on Monday, May 21, from the office of the executive secretary of NUC, dated May 14, listed all the illegal universities across the country.
