Explain why you should not be sent to prison - Rivers APC tells INEC chairman

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state has asked the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to appear in court to explain why he should not be sent to prison for allegedly disobeying subsisting court orders and excluding their candidates in the forthcoming elections in the state.

Vanguard reports that the APC in Rivers state has served contempt proceedings Mahmood Yakubu to ensure the inclusion of its candidates in the forthcoming elections in the state.

Prince Tonye Princewill, the director, strategic communications, Tonye Cole campaign organisation, said on Sunday, February 17, that proceedings have been served on INEC for refusing to include the APC on ballot papers for the Rivers elections

“Proceedings were served yesterday because INEC has shown us that it is no longer independent. How else can you explain the speed they acted after a judgement by Omotosho that said we should not only be removed from the ballot, but we should also be barred from campaigning? People should learn to fear God," Princewill said.

“Now, that same Omotosho order has been stayed, yet two weeks later, we’re still waiting for our rights to be restored and INEC is comfortable that it has not been given to us. To make matters worse, the Supreme Court last week, threw out the appeal against the stay judgement. So, what is still holding INEC? They cannot exclude us. But if they do, they will face the legal consequences. We can either do this election once or they will conduct it twice. The law is on our side.”

The APC chieftain warned that the elections in Rivers state will not stand if INEC refused efforts by the party to get listed on the ballots.

Meanwhile, following the objections by the PDP and the APC to INEC' s ban on campaign during the time frame of the extension of the elections, the electoral body has decided to meet on Monday, February 18, in order to reconsider its decision.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, the chief press secretary of of Mahmood Yakubu, INEC's national chairman, said that the commission, as part of the agenda of the said meeting, will review its position and reach an agreement as to whether or not campaigns can be reopened.
