Election 2019: Police vow to arrest anyone caught with weapons in political rallies

The police in Zamfara state has warned against the possession of illegal and offensive weapons during political rallies across the state.

The Zamfara police command spokesperson, Muhammad Shehu, on Tuesday, February 5, said the police in the state would no longer allow the use of offensive weapons during political rallies.

Premium Times reports that Shehu in a statement said the command observed with utmost dismay that despite several sensitisation most of the politicians were seen with armed supporters during such campaigns.

Shehu noted that the command is determined and total committed to ensuring that Zamfara state witness a violence-free election.

He said: “In view of the command’s determination and total commitment to ensuring violence-free conduct of 2019 general elections, any person or group of persons seen with any weapon during any campaign/rally of any political party, such person will be arrested instantly and he will be made to face the full wrath of the law."

“Therefore, the command calls on political parties and their aspirants to play the game in line with the rules of engagement so that the aspiration of conducting free, fair credible and acceptable 2019 general elections will be achieved.

“Furthermore, the commissioner of police assures members of the public especially politicians that, the police in the state will continue to remain neutral by providing equal security during any of their political activities before, during and after 2019 elections,” Shehu said in the statement.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former president of Liberia, on Tuesday, February 6, arrived in Abuja as the head of ECOWAS observer mission in Nigeria ahead of the 2019 general elections.

She was received by the vice president of the ECOWAS commission, Finda Koroma, members of the commission and some representatives of the ECOWAS Parliament.

According to Johnson-Sirleaf, she expects to meet with political leaders and join Nigerians to ensure that the process is peaceful and successful.
