Election 2019: IGP orders water-tight security around INEC facilities

- The Nigeria Police Force seems ready to ensure security of lives and properties as the 2019 general elections approaches

- The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered water-tight security around INEC facilities nationwide

- The IGP also assured Nigerians of adequate security ahead of the elections

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a comprehensive water-tight and round-the-clock security for all Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices and facilities nationwide few days to the 2019 general elections.

This was revealed in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Sunday, February 10, by the force public relations officer, ACP Frank Mba.

According to the statement, all commissioners of police in the 36 states of the federation and FCT have been directed to put in place adequate security arrangements aimed at protecting all INEC offices and materials from all forms of crimes and mischief - before, during and after the elections.

“Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) have also been mandated to monitor compliance level of commands under their jurisdiction with the directive,” the statement noted.

The AIGs are also to ensure that no breach of security of any kind occurs within and around INEC facilities under their watch and the order is said to take immediate effect.

The IGP also assured Nigerians of the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to deliver on its mandate of providing a safe and enabling environment for the conduct of the general election.

He reiterated the commitment of the force to providing a level playing field for all political actors, while remaining professional and apolitical in the discharge of its responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has urged Nigerian youths to participate in the forthcoming 2019 elections, stressing that their participation in the polls will prevent rigging.

Saraki who is the director-general of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, made the plea in a video posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, February 10.

The Kwara-born politician called on all young Nigerians of voting age to see the 2019 election as a test of the strength of their numbers, adding that with 51% of the voters on the register being youths, they make up the most crucial voting bloc in the country.
