Edo PDP accuses INEC of conniving with APC to rig presidential election

- EDO state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party has accused INEC of working with the APC to rig the February 16 presidential election

- The state PDP’s publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare, also alleged that there were plans by security agents to arrest some PDP leaders in the state ahead of the election

- INEC, however, dismissed the allegations of conniving with the APC to rig the election

EDO state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral) Commission (INEC) of conniving with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to rig the February 16 presidential election.

Vanguard reports that the PDP alleged that the APC and the INEC have perfected what it called “evil plans” to sabotage the electoral process in some local government areas in the state.

The state publicity secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare, made the allegations at a briefing in Benin on Wednesday, February 13

He also alleged that there were plans by security agents to arrest some PDP leaders in the state with a view to keeping them out of circulation until after the elections.

Nehikhare also accused the Edo state government of perfecting plans to use the state security outfit, Wabaizigzan, to monitor the election, when according to him, the police, Nigerian Army and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC) have enough men and material to provide security during the election.

He said: “We have been reliably informed that voting will be postponed to a later day due to ‘logistics problems,’ in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode, Ovia, Esan Northeast/Esan Southeast, Akoko-Edo and Etsako federal constituencies.

“The aim is to have these constituencies as standalone elections where the federal government can unleash their agents of intimidation and harassment to full effect. The plan is barbaric, evil, a recipe for chaos and unprecedented people’s revolt and reaction.

“We use this medium to advise INEC to perish the thought. Edo people will not accept, condone or tolerate any display or exhibition of ‘deliberate incompetence,’ as an excuse to sabotage the general election.”

However, Edo state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Emmanuel Alex-Hart, dismissed the allegations, saying INEC had no plan to postpone elections in some local government areas of the state.

Alex-Hart said elections would be held simultaneously across the state on dates scheduled by INEC, adding that if there was any postponement, the directive would be from its national headquarters and not from any individual.

Meanwhile, a N200 million ransom has been demanded by the abductors of Monday Aighobhahi, the director general of the campaign organisation of the APC candidate for the Ovia Federal Constituency of Edo, Dennis Idahosa.

The APC reps candidate, Idahosa, said the abductors contacted him to demand for the ransom few hours after the abduction.

Idahosa said: “Yes, they called around 9pm last night and again called early this morning insisting on payment of N200m before they would release Aighobhahi.

“I am quite aware of the sinister motive of the people behind this but they have failed; the determination to liberate Ovia is not all about Idahosa, it is the resolve of the people and they cannot kill the will of the people."
