Despite report of looming violence, new Kano police boss assures peace, blows hot on drug abuse

- Kano police has assured the people of the state of absolute professionalism on its side during the election

- In a statement by the newly appointed commissioner, Mohammed Wakili, the command also promised to maintain neutral status

- Wakili also promised to tackle the lingering situation of drug abuse in the state

The newly appointed commissioner of police in Kano state, Mohammed Wakili, has assured the people of the state that the police would demonstrate absolute professionalism and maintain their neutral status during the forthcoming general elections in the state.‎‎

NAN reports that he gave the assurance when he paid a courtesy visit to Gov. ‎Abdullahi Ganduje at Government House, Kano on Wednesday, February 13.

He said that he came to the state when political activities were very tensed and there were ‎challenges here and there.

He said: “There were challenges, even though it is normal, but it gives a little concern which must be addressed before it goes out of hand.‎

“The law of the land is very clear, the electoral laws are very clear and the peace accord signed in Kano is still relevant.”

He further added that he would fight the menace of drugs abuse in order to check political thuggery, which has direct connection with drugs and substance abuse.

He said: “I cannot finish this small remark without touching two critical issues: When I was serving in Katsina state I fought drug abuse to the minimal.

“If it is the last thing I will do in my profession, I will fight drug abuse to the last drop of my blood.

“You cannot divorce these drugs from political thugs. I am going to confront the situation also because it is causing a lot of mayhem.''

‎He also said that the police in the state recently arrested 50 political thugs over attack on innocent residents.

In a ‎remark, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, said that Kano is the most populous state in the country and biggest democracy.

He added that the commissioner was coming at a very difficult but very interesting time. He said that he signed peace accord together with other stakeholders in order to ensure peace before, during and after election in Kano state.

He called on the people of state to abide by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of elections for the stability of democracy in Kano and by extension in Nigeria.‎

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the police command in Bauchi on Wednesday, February 13, said no fewer than 6,000 personnel had been deployed in the area to provide security during the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

The commissioner of police, Alhaji Ali Janga, made the announcement in an interview in Bauchi.
