Barcelona reveal 1 important thing they are doing before Messi retires

- Lionel Messi is coming of age and would hang up his boots in a few years

- President Josep Bartomeu has revealed they are preparing for his retirement

- Messi signed a new deal at the Camp Nou in 2017 which will expire in 2021

Lionel Messi is still going strong for his club Barcelona but President Josep Bartomeu has revealed that they already making plans for his retirement.

The 31-year-old has been the standout player in all of Europe's top leagues this season but Bartomeu is making already plans ahead of the future.

"I know one day Lionel will say he's retiring," he told BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily.

The 56-year-old will step down as Barca's president in 2021 but he knows more quality players will be drafted into the senior team before he reign expires.

The Catalan giants recently completed the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax for a reported fee of £65million.

"We have to prepare the club for the future," Bartomeu continued.

"We are bringing great young players to the team because we need to continue this era of success. That's our responsibility.

"My mandate will be finished in two seasons. So I need to leave the club in a great position and tell the new president 'that's our legacy.'"

Messi on the other hand, signed a new deal at the Camp Nou in 2017 which will keep with the Spanish side until 2021.

And the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's buyout clause was raised to £626m. The Barcelona captain revealed, it was his dream "finish my career at Barça and we are moving down that path."

Coach Ernesto Valverde has been carefully managing Messi's fitness and his recovery from injuries this season.

The Argentine talisman was a second half substitute when Barcelona played out a 1-1 draw with rivals Real Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi final clash at the Nu Camp.

And Valverde has explained why Messi was on the bench for Wednesday's El Clásico.

"The decisions you make are based on what you think is better for the team and the player," he said (via Goal).

"He had discomfort. Today, he was better but we thought it was best he enter in the second half.

"He could be decisive because we know the danger he creates every time he gets the ball."
