Ballot box snatching comment: Apologise to Nigerians - Aborishade tells Buhari

- Femi Aborishade wants President Muhammadu Buhari to apologise to Nigerians over his threat to ballot box snatchers

- Aborishade claims the warning is against the electoral law that stipilates 24 months for those involved

- The human rights lawyer says the comment by the president could give impetus to the nation's security agencies

Notable human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Aborishade, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to apologise to Nigerians over his threat to ballot box snatchers ahead of the election.

The lawyer, who described the threat as against the provision of the laws of the country’s electoral process, added that such comment from a president could be seen as arbitrary and undemocratic.

President Buhari had, during a meeting of the national caucus of the APC, warned ballot box snatchers and to desist as those leading them to carry out the act would be doing so at the ‘expense of their lives’.

While many supports and members of the APC including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu argue that the president’s comment is not an outright order to security agencies in the country, some others say it could give impetus to the alleged high-handedness of which security agencies in Nigeria are accused.

Aborishade, Daily Independent reports, asked the government led by the All Progressive Congress (APC) to publicly announce unconditional commitment to the due process and section 129(4) of the electoral act.

He noted that the act prescribes 24 months imprisonment for the same offence.

Aborishade said it is widely held that the comment by the president would only be implemented arbitrarily against the opposition unlike how those who do same in favour of the ruling party would be treated.

He noted that this is same way some political elements in the country are given ‘deodorant’ treatments because they belong to the ruling party while others are treated with ‘insecticides’.

Legit.ng earlier reported how the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s warning that those who try to snatch ballot boxes during the general elections will be doing so at their own risk.

Dogara, speaking at press conference on Monday, February 18, said Buhari’s statement was a violation of Nigerian laws which have provided sanctions for electoral offenders.
