14 die, 68 others infected with Lassa fever - NCDC reveals

- The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NDDC) has revealed in a report that Lassa fever led to the deaths of 14 people in 13 states

- NCDC also said the Ondo had the number of infected cases with 22 people affected by the scourge

- The report by the centre put the number of death cases in the country since the beginning of the year at 57

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday, February 10, said that there are 68 new Lassa fever cases, 14 deaths in 13 states across the country and unconfirmed 77 yellow fever situations so far in 2019.

This was revealed in the centre’s report which covered from Monday, January 28 to Sunday, January 3, The Guardian reports.

The cases of death were said to have happened in Oyo, Delta, Kaduna, Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Edo, and Ondo states.

The analysis of the report also further showed that seven people suffered infection in Ebonyi, 20 in Edo state, four for Bauchi and Plateau, while Ondo has the highest number of infected victims with 22 reported cases.

The report also showed that there have been 57 death cases altogether since the year, 2019, began, even as 98 patients are currently placed under treatments.

The NCDC said that the yellow fever plague has five cases presupposed to be positive and one case that is yet to be concluded.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that NCDC said Nigerians need not panic over the rising cases of lassa fever because it has initiated measures in response to the disease in the country.

The advice was expressed in a statement on Wednesday, January 23, by the chief executive officer of NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu in Abuja.

Ihekweazu said that in preparation for this year’s emergency phase, NCDC had been providing support to states, including emergency supplies and deployment of Rapid Response Teams (RRTs).
